Promoting youth hockey in New Brighton, Mounds View, St. Anthony and Shoreview, MN
My my My my

From the (new) President - May, 2005

Thank you and welcome to your new IYHA Board of Directors.  Two familiar faces have departed to a hopefully more tranquil hockey lifestyle.  Brad and Dan's efforts and contributions towards the IYHA are very much appreciated.  Brad has helped my transition into the role as President.  We attended a couple of meetings together before the election, one for Minnesota Hockey and one (on my birthday, thank you) for a proposed Arden Hills TCAAP sports complex.  Brad and Dan will hopefully continue to be a resource for information and knowledge in the weeks ahead.

Most of your Board is unchanged.  I am delighted that Niki and Chris have chosen to continue for another term.  The only voting on April 21st was for Boys Coordinator.  This was the first contested position since 2002.   While Mark Mohar defeated Gary Dahle in the vote count that night, some aspects of the voting have been called into question.  The Board will need to take action to resolve the issue on May 19th.

Another issue concerns the Ace Coordinator position.  This has been an ongoing topic since mid-season.  A decision is scheduled on May 19th.

Another important area for discussion concerns the structure for teams for next season; specifically with possible options for U8, U14, Initiation and Bantam.  If time permits, we will visit the issue on May 19th.

May 19th - 6:30pm.  Mark it on your calendar right now if you have an interest in the above mentioned issues.  Mark it on your calendar if you would like to meet your new IYHA Board members.  Mark it on your calendar if there is space between the notations already scratched there for a track meet, baseball practice, band concert and Girl Scout meeting.  Niki arranged a special location with plenty a space in room #218 in the New Brighton Family Service Center.

The entire Board knows that our election process must be reviewed during the coming months, but not on May 19th.  My biggest concern about the recent election was the low membership involvement.  21 members at our annual meeting?!?  Not good enough.  (Actually, we had 22.  Dan Jobin couldn't stay long and left without voting.)   We may have the correct method of voting, but there may be ways to improve how we do it.  Is 6:30pm on a weeknight inconvenient?  Is the election process understood well enough?  I would like to encourage more membership involvement.  I welcome your thoughts and ideas.

Arden Hills TCAAP (Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant) Sports Complex Proposal:  75 acres have been designated by the City of Arden Hills for a sports complex just south of County Road I and Snelling Avenue.  Preliminary plans call for various softball, baseball and football/soccer fields as well as an indoor facility large enough to include a track and athletic field and two hockey rinks.  The hockey rinks would support Bethel College, the Mounds View and Irondale varsity programs and youth hockey.  Shoreview Arena would be eliminated.  The TCAAP complex is at least three years away if funding can be obtained.

Other ice arena news:  Forest Lake is permanently closing their arena, which will add to competition for available ice time.  The National Sports Center owns the Schwan's Super-Rink and Columbia Arenas.  They are considering closing the Columbia facility as well as constructing up to four new practice level arenas to the Super-Rink complex.

I hope that you are enjoying your spring.  Be thinking about summer parades and other ways to promote youth hockey to those poor, unsuspecting young families.  Brian Johnson has spearheaded a new program to help new recruits to our program.  Brian is gathering "gently" used hockey gear that will be offered to new players as a way to help reduce their initial investment in the sport.  If you have outgrown gear, instead of taking it to Play-It-Again Sports, get it to Brian and help grow our association.

I am excited to have the opportunity to help guide this association for the next two years.  I hope that I have a few fresh ideas to bring to the table.  I will do my best to keep you informed.  I ask that you keep me informed.  Feel free to pass along your thoughts and suggestions.  See you on May 19th.

New business-Board Roundtable:

President: Brad DeKanick. Met with Minnesota Hockey. Redistricting is not on the table. There is a fair amount of discussion statewide about this. TCAAP: attended a preliminary meeting with Jim Cich. Planning began 5-10 years ago. Includes fields-baseball, softball, soccer, football, lacrosse. Also will include 2 indoor hockey rinks, field house, etc. Very preliminary states of planning.

Vice President: Brian Johnson. Will start on the Parades soon. IYHA  membership has been set for the Tournament committee.

Treasurer: Jeanne Falconer. All bills have been paid. All team checkbooks except 4 have been turned in. There are a few questions about why Ice is so inexpensive this year. Some of that is related to how the scheduling occurred; there has been difficulty in tracking the ice for each team.

Secretary: Niki Gjere. Newsletter deadline is May 1st.

Registration Coordinator: Pat O'Connor. Everything is okay.

Twin Cities District: Tom Welty. MN Hockey-contrary to what Brad was told, there is discussion about the redistricting. The change would occur in 2006-2007 season.
